Women's
contributions are essential to the functioning of the
economy. However, because women's contributions are not
valued in the same way as men's, women consistently find
themselves at a lower economic status than men. Women
make up the majority of poor people in Canada and 70%
of the world's 1.5 billion people living in absolute poverty.
As the Beijing Platform for Action sums up:
Women contribute significantly to
economic life everywhere. However, women are largely excluded
from economic decision-making. They face low wages, poor
working conditions and limited employment and professional
opportunities
[and] their unpaid work is not measured
and not valued in national accounts.
